Your Best Poker Strategy for Cash

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

When you play poker, you need to understand lots of things about the game itself. A cash poker game is much different from poker tournaments, and you will have to have a cash game strategy if you want to find long term success with that format. Online poker offers countless opportunities for people to play in cash games. There are free poker sites with all sorts of tables, styles, and limit levels. But what are you going to do when you sit down at these tables?

First and foremost, your cash game strategy for both online poker and live poker has to be the same in terms of bankroll. You need to be sufficiently bankrolled before you ever get started. This means that you should have at least 20 buy-ins to a given level that you want to play. This will allow you to always buy in for the maximum when you play poker and it will allow you to play your best poker game because you aren’t playing with scared money. You have no idea how important this is until you sit down at a table with less than the minimum and start getting pushed around by other players.

Likewise, you have to understand that cash games reward the most aggressive players. Poker tournaments can sometimes present situations where you need to be cautious. Cash games are all about going and getting the money, though. There is no bubble to worry about and there aren’t prize money tiers to worry about. With online poker cash games, you have to be on your game every single hand. Likewise, in cash games, you can’t play loose before the flop. You have to be willing to fold marginal hands, because giving away your bankroll one big blind at a time is a terrible way to approach online poker.

In cash games, you need to be looking for the big score. You have to be a little bit more willing to chase big hands because of the reward that comes with catching them. This will require you to keep a much keener eye on implied odds and expected value for all hands. That is not to say that you should start playing poker like a fish. It only means that there is more reward and less risk involved in chasing hands in cash games. If you drop below the table maximum, you can always buy more chips.
